01. Portraiture Workshop
In this exciting course, we will explore traditional approaches to portrait drawing. Learn to see and
understand the structure of the face, as you apply a variety of ways to capture the likeness. Principles of form, tone, technique, composition and lighting will also be explored along with demonstration. Dry media includes your choice of pencil, charcoal, brown and white chalk, or soft pastel. Bring your select materials and paper to first meeting. Previous drawing experience is encouraged.

02. Watercolor for Beginners
This beginner class is for students who have not worked in watercolor before or who would like to revisit the basics of watercolor. Discover the unique characteristics of watercolor and fundamental techniques such as color washes, surface preparation and transparency. First class meeting we will discuss what materials you will need. Materials can run $30 - $40 (Student buys their own materials.)

03. Basic Fine Art Photography
This course is for beginners who wish to explore the potential for personal expression through photography. We will discuss photography as a medium for artistic expression. Emphasis will be on the discerning eye, enabling you to find that special shot. Class discussion will include composition, lighting, time of day and angles. This course does not teach camera mechanics. Field experience will also be included along with follow-up critiques of photos. A camera is required.

04. Water Exercise with Water Walking
This water exercise class utilizes the unique properties of water to enhance mobility, strength, stamina, endurance, balance, posture and body awareness; all important components in fall prevention and health. Swimming is not required for this class. For your safety both in and out of the water, water shoes or aqua socks are strongly recommended. Exercise water noodle is required and will be available for $1.00 at the first class. 05. Yoga Flow
This class is designed for students who have been practicing yoga. If you are fit, healthy and want to increase your strength and flexibility join us for this invigorating series as we explore flowing Sun Salutations and more challenging poses that you learn to practice at home. 06. Yoga Relaxation
Give yourself the benefit of deep relaxation. In this class students will be introduced to gentle and restorative yoga poses that release tension from the body. Learn the practice of breathing and basic meditation techniques used to calm your body and mind. This gentle class is open to all levels of physical fitness. Instructor: Amy MacDonald, Yoga

07. Tai Chi / Qi Gong
Tai Chi and Qi Gong are ancient Chinese practices for health. Tai Chi is often referred to as meditation in motion. The slow, gentle movements promote flexibility, balance and a sense of well-being. Qi Gong is practiced by people around the world to promote a longer, more active life. Both practices increase energy, open joints, stretch muscles and enhance balance. Instructor: Dr. Sandra Tinto-Singer, Ph.D. Traditional Chinese Medicine, MS Oriental Medicine, 20 years experience in Marshall Arts.

08. Geology and the City of Angels
From Venice Beach, over the mountains, into the valleys and basins, and beyond; Los Angeles is a city that is wed to its physical environment. Come and explore some basic tenets of geology and their impact on our city. Topics will include the tectonics and rocks of Los Angeles, earthquakes and historical seismicity, mass movements (landslides and debris flows), and the geological and water resources of the City and County of Los Angeles. If you have ever wondered, why there was oil under Signal Hill, why the Los Angeles River is a big concrete channel, or what a large earthquake would mean to Los Angeles, this is the class for you.

09. East of Eden
“And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelt as a fugitive on the earth, at the east side of
Eden” (Genesis, 4:16). Published in 1952, East of Eden is John Steinbeck’s tribute to The Salinas Valley – his birthplace. Join us for six weeks as we closely study this 600-page novel that follows the destinies of two families whose generations reenact the fall of Adam and Eve, and the rivalry of Cain and Abel. The class discussion is sure to be rich as we ponder this great work by the Nobel Prize winner who once commented, “Writers are a little below clowns and a little above trained seals.”
