3.1 Multiple Intelligences
Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard
University believes that intelligence can not be measured by one single
instrument that has been used in the past and symbolized by the "IQ
score" that is in wide spread use today. His research shows that people
exhibit eight different types of intelligences:
1.
logical/mathematical intelligence is
often referred to as "scientific thinking,"
2.
the visual spatial intelligence is
associated with the ease of creating mental images,
3.
bodily/kinesthetic intelligence is
related to physical movement,
4.
verbal/linguistic intelligence is
seen is those with good written and oral language skills,
5.
musical/rhythmic Intelligence is
based on recognition of tonal patterns,
6.
Interpersonal Intelligence is
manifested with strong person-to-person relationships.
7.
Intrapersonal Intelligence is
associated with the state of the inner being and metacognition,
8.
Naturalist Intelligence
In his book "Frames of Mind, The Theory of Multiple
Intelligences", Dr. Gardner explains how individuals possess all eight
intelligences to varying degrees, with some intelligences showing dominance.
Students engage in the learning process more readily when activities are
planned to stimulate their dominant intelligence. Understanding of the concepts
in Howard Gardner's model will assist instructors in preparing lessons designed
to enhance the natural learning abilities of students. This theory suggests
that instructors should provide a rich learning environment that utilizes a
variety of teaching strategies to ensure that students' differing needs are
met. By planning a rich mix of instructional activities focusing on the
learners strengths, talents and abilities, a fertile learning environment is
created, one that produces effective teaching and learning results.

An interesting book on this subject
is by David Lazar, "Eight Ways of Knowing".
Here is an example of a poem written
by a student in Chef Scarmuzzi's class (October, 2001) at Culinard, The
Culinary Institute of Virginia College, after he studied and then talked about
the musical/rhythmic intelligence, found in this section, with his students:
The Trick Godfather
By Tiffani Cameron
I woke up morning in the Hotel of
Swine,
There are vacancies, I’ve been here
a time.
They call me TRICHNOSIS, that’s my
real name,
I live to infect your body, that’s
my real game.
I’m livin’ really fabulous, even
though I’m just a worm,
The Trick-Godfather is what I’m
called by all the germ.
You want a piece of me, that thrills
me the most,
I’d love to expand my business, I’m
looking for a host.
Pigs a little salty, deer’s a little
sweet,
Eat some raw bologna, I need some
fresh meat.
I’ll hatch my larvae children, cause
papa’s a rollin’ stone,
Our rooms are in your muscles; your
body’s our new home.
You humans are so weak, I plan to
stay for years,
Is your stomach feeling sick, now
wipe away those tears.
I’m just a simple parasite, but yet
I make you squirm,
I feel you’re putting up a fight,
when will you people learn.
Please don’t get me wrong, it can be
hard for me to survive,
But you humans can’t cook very well,
that’s what keeps me alive.
So eat porky pig and daffy duck,
they’re all places I can dwell,
But when you store me correctly, and
cook me through and through,
You can send me back to ...!
An interesting way to remember
things is by the use of pictures.
Please see the attached pictures by
clicking
here. The Chairman of the cabinet
is the Attorney General. Since this picture was drawn, a new secretary has
been added and that is the Secretary of Homeland Security. If you wish to
see who these cabinet people are presently, go to the following website: http://www.whitehouse.gov/government. Another way to remember the cabinet is to use the words "Eve
that's a Child. For example, "e" is for energy," v" is
for veteran affairs, etc. The only one not included is the Secretary of Homeland
Affairs in these words.
